2000 years ago Hippocrates said  "Leave your drugs in the chemist's pot if you can heal the patient with food”.  Clear evidence that science has always known the role that food plays in our health.

Unfortunately, this simplistic, smart way of thinking has been discarded in American culture.

This idea fell by the wayside during the first 50 years of the 20th century, as the discovery  that many deficiency diseases began to occurred due to food processing.

This lead to "enrichment" of processed foods to help people regain health lost when they abandoned real whole foods.

Did you know it is possible to eat all day long and still starve yourself.  If what  you eat are foods with little to no nutrition, such as over-cooked foods, processed and many purchased foods, you will not receive the nutrients your body needs to function properly, let alone heal disease. All the body has to work with are the foods we put into it, and it needs the best foods we can give it, in order to combat the stress and environmental toxins  we cannot avoid in today’s world.

Whole foods act as "medicine”, in that they protect and heal the body. In other words, if we fortify the body with healthy nutrients from fresh foods, we likely won’t have a need for medicine. Individual foods each have their own unique set of nutrients that meet the varying requirements of the body. This is why it’s so important to eat a wide variety of foods; to ensure that your body gets all of the diverse nutrients that it needs.

Consider fresh vegetables, which are among the most powerful of foods. They contain natural antioxidants including vitamins A, C, E, carotenes, zinc, selenium, bioflavonoids, tocopherols, lutein and quercetin and many beneficial phytochemicals. These help to fight age-related and chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease, boost the immune system, fight osteoporosis, lower your risk of diabetes, and slow brain aging. They will also help to alkalinize the body, as most of us are too acidic.

Eating healthy vegetables everyday, gives us more complete nutrition than any multi-vitamin supplement. This is because the combination of substances in a whole food is more effective than any specific dietary nutrient that has been isolated and artificially combined with other nutrients.  However, supplement companies ( many of which are drug manufactures ) have provided cheap chemical imitations that do not work.

You are the one who controls what goes into your body. So choose foods that have the greatest nutritional value and try to eat them in a way that will maximize the nutrient value to the body.  In most cases, this means raw. At least one-third of all the food you eat should be raw, because cooking and processing can destroy essential micronutrients.

The new standard is 10 -13 servings of fresh fruits and veggies per day for adults, for optimal good health.
